Washington Mine

The Washington Mine was one of the largest gold mines of the 1880s, with a working history spanning more than 140 years and a haul that included gold, silver, lead and zinc, won through both underground hardrock and placer methods. Today it offers something no other Breckenridge site can: a guided walk roughly 200 feet underground into the historic workings, led by Breckenridge History interpreters.

Above ground, the site preserves original tools, mining equipment and reconstructed buildings that show how raw ore was milled. Tours run about 90 minutes and finish with gold-panning instruction — visitors keep whatever they find.

The mine sits in Illinois Gulch off Boreas Pass Road, about a 15-minute drive from downtown. The underground stays cool even in midsummer, so bring a warm layer and closed-toe shoes; tours run June through September and are recommended for ages six and up.
