Colorado School of Mines lays out its own campus as a one-mile, thirteen-stop walking route through Golden, and you can take it any day without booking or paying anything. The tour begins at the Starzer Welcome Center on Illinois Street, where printed maps sit near the main entrance around the clock, and loops north through the working heart of a research university built on earth, energy and materials.

What makes it worth an hour is how much of the campus is genuinely open. Brown Hall holds the Design Factory, a machine shop and the Brown Garage where the Mines Hyperloop team works, with a CubeSat ground station on the roof. The Labriola Innovation Hub runs makerspaces and public workshops in welding, glassblowing and 3D printing. Hill Hall's foundry hosts "Free Pour Friday," where students cast aluminum. Guggenheim Hall wears one of only three gold domes in Colorado, alongside the State Capitol and Casa Bonita.

The best story is underfoot at Kafadar Commons: buried beneath the lawn are pipes, archaeological walls, coffins and a full keg of Coors, planted so geophysics students can learn ground-penetrating radar on real targets. Buildings are open to walk into when classes are in session, so long as you are considerate. Allow an hour, or longer if you stop at Book and Brew in Arthur Lakes Library.
