Swan Lake and River

The Swan River offers challenging boating and fishing spots for nearly 40 miles in the heart of the Swan Valley. On the northern section flowing from Swan Lake into Flathead Lake, visitors can find sections for lazy floating on inner tubes a favorite past time on hot summer days. Swan Lake is a boater's paradise for sea kayaks, canoes, fishing and water skiing. The lake is large and even in the busiest days of the summer, the boat traffic is minimal compared to other popular lakes in the region.

Boat Access Locations

Primary boat launch for Swan Lake is at the USFS put in in the village of Swan Lake. Access points for the river vary. Visitors should obtain a map from the U.S. Forest Service.

Driving Directions from Nearest Town or Landmark

Both lake and river parallels Montana Highway 83, and there are several access points for over 50 miles

Fishing Access Highlights

In addition to boat launches, anglers can access for walk and wade at bridge crossings over the river, and at turn outs for the lake

Fishing Highlights

Great float or walk and wade fishing for rainbow, cutthroat and bull trout on the river. Anglers on the lake can fish for pike, trout and Kokanee salmon. If you need equipment, there are outfitters available to guide on both the lake and river.

Paddling Highlights

The Swan River is an advanced setting, so canoers must be well equipped and prepared for many natural obstacles. Hard kayaks can be fun boaters should check conditions with local agencies.

RECREATING IN BEAR COUNTRY While a bear sighting is not always guaranteed you should be prepared in case of an encounter. The Crown of the Continent region is ideal bear habitat and supports a healthy population of both black and grizzly bears. Always carry bear spray with you, never feed wildlife, know your bears, keep a safe distance, and properly store attractants.

FISHING

  • Fishing license is required on Montana managed waters.
  • Know fishing rules and regulations for where you plan to fish, as this will let you know what time of year you can fish certain sections, what you can fish with, and what you can fish for.
  • Be wary of water tempartures rising. Fish become stressed as dissovled oxygen level drops. Try to fish in the early morning. Always be aware of regulations specific to the water-body you will fish. Hoot owl fishing restrictions may be in place.
