Mancos Creative District

Mancos Creative District, located at the intersection of art and adventure in the historic downtown area of Mancos, Colorado, between the La Plata Mountains and Mesa Verde, spans several blocks and is home to galleries, artisan cooperatives, an historic opera house, and a thriving common press housed in late 1800s buildings. The Mancos Valley has a long history of inspiring and attracting creativity, which is part of the fabric of the community that enlivens spirits, helps people connect, and strengthens the economy.

Founded in 1991 as the Mancos Valley Arts Council, the organization works to support the creative culture through public art, creative events, learning and education programs, scholarships, and more. The Creative District serves as a hub for the myriad of cowboys, craftsmen, artists, musicians, brewers, chefs, farmers and makers who live and work in the valley. It hosts four annual arts-focused events celebrating local songwriting, music, literature, performance, visual and culinary arts, two of which are the largest sales days of the year for local artists, shops, and restaurants.

Beyond events, the organization coordinates public art projects, awards scholarships, provides art classes and professional development, and partners with businesses and nonprofits to strengthen both economic vitality and community connection. In 2024, the Creative District began pursuing acquisition and stewardship of the historic Mancos Opera House, launched a capital and capacity campaign in 2025, with a goal to secure ownership in 2026 and expand programming that drives both social and economic impact.
