Friends of the Dillon Ranger District
Friends of the Dillon Ranger District is the official volunteer partner of the U.S. Forest Service unit that manages the White River National Forest lands surrounding Breckenridge — which means the trails you hike here are, in large part, kept up by its volunteers.
From its Silverthorne base, FDRD organizes more than 60 volunteer projects a year, concentrated in the May-to-October trail season: building and maintaining trails, planting trees, pulling invasive weeds and supporting forest-health work across Summit County's public lands.
Here's the good part for travelers: you can join. Summer trail days are open for sign-up directly on the fdrd.org events calendar, and the organization also runs free guided tours and a speaker series. A morning of trail work makes a more memorable souvenir than most things on Main Street.
