Danny On Memorial Hiking Trail

There's no better way to commune with Big Mountain than hiking up its spine. The trail offers one main village to summit route, with loop extensions to Flower Point and on the East Rim. The longest route is 5.6 miles from base to summit.

Highlights and Best Features of this Trail

The trail winds through alpine fir forests and spectacular fields of wildflowers and offers a fabulous view of the Flathead Valley. As one ascends, glimpses into Glacier National Park come into view. Famous locally for its abundance of huckleberries and cyclical displays of bear grass lilies.

When you arrive at the Summit swing by the Summit Nature Center (in lower level of Summit House). The Summit Nature Center is operated and staffed by the Flathead National Forest and offers a place to learn about local flora and fauna, in winter and summer. The summer is a wonderful time to join a 'roving ranger' at the summit and on the trail for a free discovery walk. Discovery walks are offered Thursday – Monday 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. with a limit of 10 people. Call 406-862-1972 for more information regarding naturalist-led walks.

Food and beverage services are offered at Mountain Village and Summit for purchase during select hours and days during winter and summer (check WMR website). You should always carry your own water and food with you when exploring the trails.
