Monte Vista Crane Festival
The 43rd Annual Monte Vista Crane Festival Returns to the San Luis Valley March 6-8, 2026
Sandhill Cranes and other migratory birds follow a long route during their seasonal migrations. Along the way, there are many places where you can stop and view these beautiful creatures. So what makes the Monte Vista Crane Festival unique? We believe it is a combination of unmatched scenery, exceptional wildlife viewing, and the friendly, welcoming communities of the San Luis Valley.
At the Monte Vista Crane Festival you can enjoy thousands of Sandhill Cranes, ducks, and geese flying against a backdrop of mountain scenery. Raptors will adorn the power poles and owls will be sitting with their young. A visit to the Monte Vista Crane Festival is an opportunity to see an amazing natural spectacle as well as experience a unique rural community.

Schedule of Events
Over three magical days in early March, Monte Vista transforms into a celebration of wings, wetlands, and western heritage. You’ll rise before dawn to watch mist swirl around graceful cranes, delve into hands‑on workshops, browse artisan booths, and cap each evening under starry skies. Below is a taste of the Festival’s rhythm—download the full schedule in our app to plan every moment.
Friday, March 6 Begin your Festival journey with a warm welcome in the historic Outcalt Event & Conference Center. Meet fellow crane‑chasers over coffee, hear stories of migration in our opening keynote, then wander the aisles of the Craft & Nature Fair as dusk falls. As the sun sets, board shuttles for your first evening crane‑viewing excursion—an unforgettable introduction to the Valley’s winged visitors.
Saturday, March 7 Awake with the cranes on a guided sunrise tour at the wildlife refuge, then linger over a hearty breakfast buffet while swapping sightings and camera tips. Mid‑morning brings a choice of in‑depth workshops—from professional photography clinics to cultural lectures—while kids can make crane‑inspired art. After lunch among the fair’s artisan stalls, stretch your legs on a scenic byway drive or join a birding walk through riparian habitat. As daylight fades, stargaze beside nocturnal crane flights against the silhouette of the Great Sand Dunes.
Sunday, March 8 Lace up for the Fly the Coop 5K run/walk—fun for all ages and abilities—then celebrate your finish with brunch and Festival awards. Late‑morning workshops explore valley traditions and family art projects, before one last communal crane‑viewing at Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge. We’ll gather for farewell remarks, leaving you with new friends, fresh inspiration, and memories of wings beating across the high‑desert sky.
