Cumbres Express Scenic Railroad
Voted #1 Scenic Train by “USA Today 10Best” readers in 2016, 2019, & 2020. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad traverses 64-miles between Chama, NM, and Antonito, CO. It crosses the borders of Colorado and New Mexico 11 times as it chugs its way up and over the 10,015 foot high Cumbres Pass.
Our scenic railroad is jointly owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico. In recognition for its place in our national history, it was awarded National Historic Landmark Designation in 2012. We’ve been operating under this prestigious designation ever since. The volunteer docents share the history, the legends, and lore of this region and the railroad.

What to bring For your comfort, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad recommends that you consider the following when planning your trip:
- The mountains can bring about sudden changes in the weather. It is important to wear layered clothing and in the late summer and fall, bring a jacket.
- Sunscreen and ball caps are also suggested to protect you from the stronger sun rays.
- Wearing sturdy, closed-toe shoes is also important to protect your toes and ankles when in the yard and on the train.
- If spending time in the open gondola car, it is very important to wear protective eyewear to protect against cinders getting into your eyes. Sunglasses and prescription glasses are fine. We also sell safety glasses for your convenience.
- We also recommend bug spray because mosquitoes sometimes stow away on the train during the ride.
