Iquitos Main Square (Plaza de Armas de Iquitos)
It was created on July 28, 1898, during the patriotic celebrations of that year, a decade and a half after the conflict against Chile. It is the oldest and most important urban space in the city of Iquitos since its establishment in 1764. It occupies the area of one city block and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city. At the center of the plaza stands an obelisk measuring 8 meters in height. It is made entirely of marble, adorned with inlaid metal engravings of heroes from the War of the Pacific; the names of all those from Loreto are inscribed on it, and it rests upon a stone platform, accompanied by three flagpoles. It is the focal point for the singing of the National Anthem of Peru. The raised flags represents the Nation and the region and are dedicated to the heroes of Peru's honorable battles. It features gardens located in small scattered areas at each corner and also within the interior of the plaza, near the obelisk.
