The Montana Dinosaur Center

In addition to the museum experience, The Montana Dinosaur Center offers public, hands-on dinosaur dig programs throughout the summer field season from June 1 - Labor Day. These programs range from half-day site tours to full-day fossil dig expeditions. The more time you spend in the field, the deeper your understanding becomes: not just of dinosaurs, but of the science behind discovering and preserving them.

Our expeditions are designed to place participants alongside professional paleontologists and trained research staff. Rather than simply observing, you become part of the process. You will learn current principles of excavation, fossil stabilization, data collection, and site documentation. By participating directly in scientific fieldwork, you gain insight into how fossils are properly recorded, preserved, and prepared for study — the same methods used in active research projects.

The Montana Dinosaur Center is a nonprofit research and educational institution dedicated to advancing science and public understanding. Historically, more than 90% of significant fossil discoveries have been made by amateurs. We embrace that tradition. Our programs are built to empower the public to contribute responsibly and knowledgeably, while minimizing the risks that can come from untrained collecting. Education, stewardship, and scientific integrity guide everything we do in the field.
