METOAC Indigenous Collective
The goal of M.I.C. is to help heal the Indigenous communities of Long Island, which include land, people, animal relatives, and all non-human kin. There is good work that has been, and that continues to be done on a grassroots level, but that work is often under-resourced. We seek to uplift and expand upon what is already present within these communities by fortifying the infrastructure that will increase capacity and allow for sustainability in their efforts.
The word Metoac (Meh-toh-wok) refers to the original name of the collective Indigenous communities on Long Island, NY, from Montauk and Orient Point the East End to the western tip of Queens. These communities, subsequently known as the "13 Tribes of Long Island", are both distinct in their Indigenous dialects, histories, and needs while at the same time identifying as Kin, as One People.
Metoac Indigenous Collective, headquartered on the Shinnecock Nation, is born of the work of individuals that are members of several of these communities who have committed to strengthening these ancient ties.
