This classic Swiss chalet style lodge, built in 1913-1914, is nestled on the shores of the largest lake in Glacier National Park. Lake McDonald Lodge has a soaring, multi-story lobby decked out in timbers and rustic trappings. Guests originally arrived at the Lodge by boat. The road along the lake was built later which explains why the front of the Lodge faces the lakeshore. The main lodge was declared a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 28, 1987. The Lodge is owned by the National Park Service and managed by concessioner Xanterra Parks & Resorts.

Lake McDonald Lodge is located 10 miles inside Glacier National Park 's west entrance on the Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Lodging Style and Amenities

Lake McDonald Lodge has 82 rustic but comfortable guest rooms in the lodge, cabins and suites. In keeping with the era in which all the rooms were built, they offer guests modest amenities. A number of rooms and cabins were remodeled for the 2016 season. These deluxe accommodations include a queen or king bed with upscale renovations. Televisions, air conditioning and elevators are not available. The location presents visitors with a unique gift shop, reading room, campstore, lounge, fine dining restaurant, and pizzeria.
