For over fifteen years, The Garbutt’s Brothers, Scully, Oliver and Eworth have been guiding the waters of Punta Gorda, east to Sapodilla Cayes, and norht to Placencia. Now after working for several lodges through the region, they now have a fishing lodge of their own, ” Garbutt’s Fishing Lodge “. A new fishing focused operation with the best location in all of Southern Belize.

Fishing for Permit The waters of southern Belize are arguably the finest in the world to target the elusive and desired permit. We specialize in fly fishing for permit, however, other species are available. With our access to hundreds of permit flats within thirty minutes of the lodge we have the opportunity to fish year round and target permit on any given day. Permit are not a species gauged by numbers to hand at the end of a trip. Rather, a successful trip is gauged by numbers of opportunities throughout a trip. If you are lucky enough to land one of these beautiful species, cherish the moment. Our guides will do their best to provide you with as many opportunities as possible each and every day.

Port of Honduras Marine Reserve Our main fishery is the Port of Honduras Marine Reserve in southern Belize. Most fishing locations are within thirty minutes of the lodge. It is not uncommon to cover as many as twenty different flats throughout a day in pursuit of permit. However, anglers should be prepared for other species as well. Even though we are a permit focused fishery and lodge we never pass up an opportunity to bend the rod when bonefish or tarpon are spotted.

Sapodilla Cayes We also have access to one of the most remote island chains in Belize, the Sapodilla Cayes. This chain of islands is located a little over an hour from the lodge and provides anglers the opportunity to experience world class bone fishing. With the location of the Sapodilla Cayes being so remote other operators aren’t able to access this amazing fishery. Even though the main stay of the Sapodilla Cayes are bonefish you should always be on the look out for permit. The Sapodilla Cayes sit within spitting distance of the second largest barrier reef in the world. This means that you can find very large deep water permit that have come into the island and flats system to feed before moving back out to deep water.

Boats and Equipment At Garbutt’s Fishing Lodge, we fish with 23 foot Super-Pangas. Our boats are ideal for both polling the flats and running over open water. All of our boats have polling platforms and are designed for fly fishing, with spacious casting decks and clean interiors. While loaner rods are available if needed, it is advised that anglers bring their own tackle and equipment.
