The Bahamas Travel Advisory
The Bahamas is currently at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution—primarily due to elevated rates of violent crime and concerns with water recreation and firearm regulations.
Crime & Personal Safety:
- Violent crime, including armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults, is a concern both in popular tourist hotspots and residential neighborhoods.
- High-risk areas include Nassau and Freeport, especially the “Over the Hill” neighborhood in Nassau (south of Shirley Street), which has seen gang-related violence, including homicides.
- Vacation rentals without private security may be more vulnerable to break-ins.
Beach & Watercraft Precautions:
- Boating and jet-ski rentals are not well regulated. Injuries, deaths, and reports of sexual assault by operators have occurred. U.S. officials forbid government personnel from using jet-skis on New Providence or Paradise Island.
- Swimmers and snorkelers should not overestimate their fitness—fatal incidents have happened due to exhaustion, currents, or even shark encounters.
- Always swim with a companion and heed local weather or marine warnings.
Firearm & Ammunition Rules:
- Strict prohibition: All firearms and ammunition—including small amounts mistakenly packed—are illegal.
- Strictly enforced, even in carry-ons; possession can result in arrest, fines, and delays in departure .
Traveler Do’s & Don’ts:
If you choose to travel:
- Keep doors locked (including balconies); don’t open to strangers.
- Do not physically resist during a robbery.
- Avoid risky water rentals; stay informed on marine and weather advisories.
- Enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) for alerts and consular access.
- Insure your trip—prioritize evacuation, medical, and trip cancellation coverage.
- Review & follow the official Traveler’s Checklist and CDC travel-health pages.
While the Bahamas remains accessible, travelers should exercise heightened vigilance—especially in crime-prone neighborhoods, around unregulated water-based activities, and by ensuring zero firearms or ammunition in their bags. Smart planning, situational awareness, secure lodging, and proper insurance can help ensure a safer and more enjoyable visit.
Safe travels and enjoy your trip to The Bahamas!
