The Abaco Islands

The Abaco Islands—a 120-mile-long stretch of idyllic cays and islands in the northern Bahamas—offer a more laid-back, authentic escape from the typical resort crowds. Famed for their turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, and nautical culture, the Abacos are a paradise for sailors, anglers, divers, and travelers seeking natural beauty and small-town charm. From the historic, candy-striped lighthouse of Hope Town to the friendly streets of Marsh Harbour, the Abacos blend colonial heritage with tropical tranquility.

When & How to Visit
  • Best time to go: The ideal time to visit is from November to April when the weather is sunny, dry, and pleasantly warm (mid-70s to mid-80s °F). Summer months (June to October) are hotter and more humid, with occasional storms, but also fewer crowds and lower prices.
  • Getting there: Fly directly into Marsh Harbour International Airport (MHH) or Treasure Cay Airport (TCB) via connections from Nassau, Miami, or Fort Lauderdale. Ferries, water taxis, and private charters connect the main islands and outlying cays, making island-hopping a breeze.

Highlights of the Islands
  • Hope Town (Elbow Cay): A charming village with colonial architecture and the iconic Elbow Reef Lighthouse, still hand-cranked and kerosene-lit.
  • Marsh Harbour: The main hub of the Abacos with shops, restaurants, marinas, and access to tours and boat rentals.
  • Great Guana Cay: Home to one of the Bahamas' best beaches and the famous Nipper’s Beach Bar—a lively spot with ocean views and Sunday BBQs.
  • Man-O-War Cay: A quiet, boat-building community known for its craftsmanship and friendly pace of life.
  • Green Turtle Cay: A blend of history and tranquility, with New Plymouth’s pastel homes, museums, and secluded beaches.
  • Pelican Cays Land & Sea Park: A pristine marine reserve with exceptional snorkeling and diving, teeming with coral and tropical fish.
  • Tahiti Beach: A postcard-perfect spot on Elbow Cay with a long sandbar and shallow turquoise water, ideal for lounging or paddling.

General Information & Visitor Tips
  • Weather: Warm year-round (70s–80s °F). Pack light, breathable clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, and a hat.
  • Currency: Bahamian Dollar (BSD), equal to USD—both are accepted.
  • Transportation: Cars are available on mainland Abaco, but golf carts and bikes are the main modes on smaller cays. Book in advance during peak seasons.
  • Etiquette & Culture: Dress relatively modest in town and respect local customs. Islanders are friendly—greet people with a smile and a “good morning” or “good afternoon.”

Whether you're sailing between serene cays, exploring colorful colonial towns, or enjoying fresh conch salad with your toes in the sand, the Abaco Islands deliver a uniquely relaxed Bahamian experience. Rich in natural beauty, maritime heritage, and warm hospitality, the Abacos are perfect for travelers seeking both adventure and tranquility—where each day ends with a sunset and a sea breeze.
