Mutton Festival

Dates: Generally falls annually on the last or second to last weekend of March.

Celebrate Long Island’s proud culinary heritage at the Mutton Festival in Salt Pond. The island is famed across The Bahamas for its sheep, but festival vendors also showcase creative dishes like mutton souse, curried mutton, baked mutton, kabobs, fried rice, fritters and more. Live music, Junkanoo rushouts, Bahamian entertainment, and family-friendly fun make this a cultural highlight.

Schedule of Events

On the Friday afternoon through nighttime, there will generally be an opening ceremony, farmer’s market, craft stands, culinary exhibits and live music. Then, starting on Saturday morning through nighttime, there will be food stalls, competitions, performances, Kiddie Corner games, and more entertainment. The event also includes award ceremonies for culinary and trivia contests.

Possible activities across both days:

  • Cooking/culinary competition
  • Trivia
  • Sack race, egg‑and‑spoon, corn‑shucking, crab catching, conch race, blindfold obstacle course
  • Kiddie Corner with storytelling and children’s games
