HMS Conqueror Wreck
Nestled just off Sumner Point Reef near Port Nelson, the HMS Conqueror lies in clear, shallow water and serves as an “underwater museum” managed by The Government of The Bahamas. Built in Devon in 1855, this 101-gun, screw‑propelled warship played roles in the Crimean War and later transporting marines to Mexico. On the evening of December 13, 1861, the ship struck a coral reef and wrecked. Miraculously, all 1,400 aboard survived. Today only metal remnants remain, creating a fascinating dive site.
When & How to Visit
- Timing: You can dive and snorkel year-round with visibility often over 100 ft. If you are visiting during the summer, plan excursions for early or mid-morning as there will likely be quick daytime squalls.
- Getting There: You can access via boat or charter from Port Nelson.
- Tour Operators: Consider visiting the wreck with a guide for the most safe, informative, and fun experience. You can check out our list under the “Guided Trips & Tours” tab. Guides will often take you to other nearby marine sights, as well.
- Diving Logistics: The wreck sits about 30 ft or 10m down—within reach of snorkelers, while certified divers get a leisurely exploration from below the surface. Bring your own gear or rent locally.
